Better Skin with Clarify: Your Guide to Smart Skincare and Safe Pairings

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has quickly become a favorite in the skincare world, celebrated for its gentle yet powerful antimicrobial and soothing properties. However, as with any active ingredient, understanding what you should and shouldn’t combine with Hypochlorous Acid is essential to getting the most out of your skincare routine. As a pharmacist, I’m here to guide you through what not to use with Hypochlorous Acid, how to safely layer your skincare for optimal results, and tell you why our mist is different.

Why Ingredient Compatibility Matters

Hypochlorous Acid is a potent oxidizing agent. While this makes it incredibly effective at neutralizing bacteria and calming inflammation, it also means Hypochlorous Acid can interact with certain skincare ingredients, potentially reducing their effectiveness or causing unwanted reactions. Understanding how to layer Hypochlorous Acid with other products ensures you get the best results without compromising your skin’s health.

What Not to Use with Hypochlorous Acid

While Hypochlorous Acid is gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types, some combinations can reduce its effectiveness or increase the risk of irritation. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid):
Vitamin C is highly acidic and can be sensitive to changes in pH. Using it at the same time as Hypochlorous Acid may reduce the effectiveness of both. For best results, use Vitamin C in the morning and Hypochlorous Acid in the evening, or allow Hypochlorous Acid to fully dry before layering Vitamin C.

  • Retinoids (Retinol):
Retinoids can be potent and sometimes drying, especially for beginners. Although Hypochlorous Acid is soothing, applying them together may cause sensitivity. It’s best to use them on alternating nights or introduce them separately.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide:
Both benzoyl peroxide and Hypochlorous Acid can be drying. Avoid using them together to prevent excessive dryness and irritation. Alternate their use on different days.

  • Exfoliating Acids (AHAs/BHAs):
Strong acids like glycolic (AHA) and salicylic acid (BHA) can irritate the skin, especially when combined with other actives. If you’re using Hypochlorous Acid to soothe your skin, introduce exfoliating acids cautiously, and consider alternating days.

General Tips:
If you’re ever unsure about a new combination, patch test first. Introduce strong actives one at a time, let each product absorb fully before layering, and when in doubt, alternate use or consult a skincare professional.
