Skincare Ingredient Mixing - Do’s and Don’ts!

If you ever layered your skincare products and ended up with irritation instead of a glow, keep reading!

Some ingredients boost each other's benefits when mixed together, while others can cause redness, dryness, or cancel each other out! Let’s break it down:

Powerful Ingredient Combos

  • Niacinamide + Salicylic acid → Salicylic Acid (BHA) exfoliates, unclogs pores, reduces breakouts while Niacinamide controls excess sebum, calms and strengthens the skin barrier. Both make a perfect combo for acne-prone skin.

  • Green Tea + Caffeine → Caffeine boosts the antioxidant effects of green tea that help in reducing signs of aging.

  • Vitamin C + Vitamin E → Vitamin C boosts Vitamin E antioxidant power. This duo is best when used before sunscreen as they help reduce sun damage for a brighter, even tone.

  • Centella Asiatica + Vitamin C → Centella Asiatica stimulates collagen production while vitamin C synthesizes collagen. Together, they promote collagen production and keep your skin youthful and resilient.

  • Niacinamide + Retinol → Retinol encourages skin cell turnover, while Niacinamide helps to calm and repair any irritation. Niacinamide calms and protects your skin while Retinol works its magic at night, for clearer, more youthful skin with minimal irritation!

Ingredient pairings to AVOID

  • Retinoids + Vitamin C → These two products can increase skin irritation. It is best to use Vitamin C in AM and Retinoids at PM.

  • Retinoids + AHA → Both are exfoliants, using them together can increase skin sensitivity, alternate their use on different nights.

  • Retinoids + Benzoyl peroxide → Benzoyl peroxide can deactivate some forms of retinoid, reducing its effectiveness. Also, both can cause dryness and irritation. It is best to use on alternate nights or BPO AM and Retinoids PM.

  • AHA + BHA → They can be effective for exfoliation, but may also cause irritation, and dryness. Use on alternate nights, no more than three nights per week.

Understanding which skincare ingredients work well together—and which ones should be avoided in combination—is key to achieving healthy, glowing skin. By being mindful of these interactions and layering products correctly, you can maximize the benefits of your skincare routine while preventing unwanted side effects.
