The Moisture Sandwich Method: How to Layer Skincare for Year-Round Hydration

People ask me all the time why their skin feels different depending on the season, even when they haven't changed a single product. The answer usually isn't the products. It's the order in which they are applied.

I formulated the Moisture Sandwich method to solve that problem, in a way that works whether it's January or July. It's three steps: hydrate, treat, seal. Let me walk you through why that order matters and how it holds up no matter what kind of weather you’re experiencing.

Hydration and Moisture Aren't the Same Thing

This is the piece most skincare routines get wrong. Hydration pertains to the water content in your skin cells. Moisture refers to products that help your skin hold onto that water. A cream can moisturize skin that has no water in it to begin with, and you'll still end up dry underneath a layer of product.

The Moisture Sandwich provides hydration first, then locks it in place. That's the entire logic behind the method.

The Three Steps

Step 1: Hydrate.
Apply Hydrate Moisture Accelerator to clean, slightly damp skin, right after cleansing, before your skin fully dries. This is a humectant. It pulls water into your skin and gives every layer after it something to build on.

Step 2: Treat.
While skin is still damp, apply your treatment serum. Glow Vitamin C Serum works well for brightening and antioxidant support, I usually reach for it in the morning. Prime Niacinamide Serum strengthens your barrier and is a better fit at night, or any time vitamin C isn't agreeing with your skin.

Step 3: Seal.
This step locks in everything you have already applied, and what this step refers to depends on your skin.

Oily or acne-prone skin seals with Repair Facial Oil, lightweight and formulated with Blue Tansy, Tea Tree and Manuka oils to calm irritation without clogging pores.

Normal to combination skin seals with Restore Intensive Night Cream, followed by Revitalize Facial Oil, then The Healer All-Purpose Balm if your skin needs extra support.

Dry, flaky or mature skin seals with Restore Intensive Night Cream, followed by Recovery Facial Oil, then The Healer All-Purpose Balm to prevent transepidermal water loss.

I know that looks like more than one product in a single step. It is. But it's still one job: seal. The number of products changes with your skin type. The order never does.

Why the Same Three Steps Work in Every Season

Winter. Cold air and indoor heat strip skin hydration rapidly. Hydrate and seal both matter here, and this is usually when the richest version of the seal step, Recovery Facial Oil plus The Healer Balm, earns its keep. NOTE: Recovery Facial Oil is specifically for skin that does not experience breakouts.

Spring and fall. Your skin is adjusting to swings in temperature and humidity. The full three steps keep it steady while everything else around it is inconsistent.

Summer. Heat and sun exposure pull moisture out even when the air feels humid. The hydrate and treat steps matter just as much during this season. Your seal step can stay lighter, Repair Facial Oil instead of a heavier balm, so you're not layering on more richness than the weather requires.

The steps don't change. What changes is how rich your seal step needs to be, and that's a decision your specific skin type makes, not the calendar.

Which Version Is Yours

I created three types of the Moisture Sandwich so you're not guessing at your seal step every time your skin shifts.

Light is for oily, combination, or acne-prone skin.

Classic is for normal to combination skin that wants more than lightweight hydration.

Rich is for dry, dehydrated, or mature skin that needs the deepest layer of support.

You can find your version and see exactly what's included at Build Your Moisture Sandwich.

The Bottom Line

Hydrate. Treat. Seal. That's the method, in every season, on every skin type I've formulated for. The only thing that changes is the combination of products during the “seal” step. Get the order right, and the products you already trust will do more for you than they were doing on their own. Shop the Moisture Sandwich!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Moisture Sandwich method?
It's a three-step layering method: hydrate, treat, and seal. Apply a hydrating serum to damp skin, follow it with a treatment serum, then seal everything in with the products formulated for your skin type.

Does the Moisture Sandwich change by season?
The steps stay the same year-round. What changes is how rich your seal step is, lighter in summer, richer in winter, based on your skin type more than the weather.

Is the seal step always one product?
It's always one step, but it can include more than one product depending on your skin type. Dry and mature skin, for example, seals with a cream, a facial oil, and a balm, all as part of that single third step.

How is this different from a regular skincare routine?
Most routines apply products in whatever order feels right. The Moisture Sandwich applies hydration first, on damp skin specifically, so every layer after it has water to work with instead of sitting on dry skin.
