How to Properly Prep for Your Makeup Routine

Appropriately hydrating the skin before makeup does two very important things:

1. It smoothes the skin's surface for a more even foundation or concealer application and can even help makeup to stay on longer.

2. Hydrating skin underneath makeup will help skin to look less dull. Applying foundation on dry skin can cause it to look cakey. (Also, don't forget this step before applying a tinted BB cream or tinted SPF!)

Here are my steps before applying concealer or foundation:

  1. Hydrating Toner: A toner is often an overlooked step in our everyday skin care routine, but it's officially time to add it to your product lineup. Toner helps to balance the skin's pH and calm & protect the skin while helping to prepare it for the most crucial step in your routine - moisturizing.

  2.  Hydrating Serum: Apply a generous amount of hydrating serum to your entire face while your skin is still a little damp from the toner. This will help your skin to better absorb the product. Look for humectant ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid for optimal hydration (BONUS: all Emogene & Co. products contain both!)

  3. Facial Oil: Applying a lightweight facial oil will help your foundation and concealer apply more seamlessly, help with the longevity of your makeup, and add a natural radiance under your foundation.

*If you have overly oily skin, use a gel moisturizer instead.

 Happy applying!
